One time it was the symbol of permanence, nowadays it's rather referred as the city of meetings. However, Debrecen principally is an educational town the motor of which is the University of Debrecen. Among the country's oldest and largest universities this one in Debrecen offers the broadest scope of education and research with more than 20 thousand students, 13 faculties, 2 individual institutes and 20 PhD schools.
Education based on the tradition of several hundred years — the Reformed College of Debrecen was founded in 1538 — has gained more and more ground in Debrecen. This expression should be interpreted literally as due to the development of the Kassai Street campus the University of Debrecen and also the city of Debrecen has enriched with many new and stylish buildings, faculties and cultural centers.

This dormitory of Debrecen, during the construction of which the opinion of students was also considered, is very popular among university students.
Debrecen has always been famous from its large scale events, such as the Flower Carnival, Béla Bartók International Choir Competition of Debrecen held once in two years, Debrecen Jazz Days, Debrecen Literature Days, Debrecen Summer Theatre Evenings or spring and summer art shows. New events have been elongated this list in the past few years: Debrecen Poetry Festival, Book Carnival and Book Show organized by the University of Debrecen. Debrecen's more and more lively intellectual life is characterized by scientific conferences, several cultural and art events, gastronomical and sport events and world championships that attract visitors to Debrecen in ascending numbers. It's good news that a new color appeared on the palette as the number of accommodation facilities increased by the development of Campus Hotel Debrecen.
